Structural engineering is the subfield of civil engineering involving the strength and stability of buildings, bridges, airplanes, vehicles and other structures. The structural engineer works with architects and designers to determine the system of support and other requirements to ensure the structural integrity of the finished product.

Every part of a commercial building is subject to the effects of the outside forces including gravity, wind, and temperature changes, just to name a few. People have constructed buildings that have tolerated these forces over a long period of time, mainly by using rules of thumb derived from their own experiences and those of their predecessors. In recent centuries, analytical paths have allowed designers to go beyond experimental limitations and predict the behavior of building systems and factors that existed only in their imaginations. This gave rise to the formalization and specialization of the modern engineering profession, which in turn led to more accurate and cost-effective designs.

Project Description:

Seven Story, 216-unit assisted living facility on the banks of the Indian River Lagoon.

Structural Design:

50 ft 16″ dia auger cast piling, Load Bearing 12″ and 8″ masonry walls, cast in place concrete columns, hollow core floor systems with pre-engineered light gauge roof trusses.  The common area between the towers is constructed of structural steel and bar joist floor system.
